Step 1: Select “Manage Ads” from the dropdown arrow menu on the far righthand side of Facebook. (If you have never set up an ad account, you’ll possibly had a different option listed here, requiring you to establish an ads account first.)

Step 2: Once inside the Facebook Ads Manager, select “Audience Insights” from the lefthand side.

Step 3: Inside Audience insights, you can research and build the ideal audience to target with your ad.

Step 4: Once you’ve created your perfect audience, click on “Create Ad” at the top of the page.

Step 5: You’ll be offered the choice of creating your ad in the standard “Ad Create Tool,” or the more advanced “Power Editor” (which requires that you use the Chrome browser). For simplicity, we will use the Ad Create Tool.

Step 6: Now you have to decide what kind of ad you’ll be running.

Step 7: For this example, we’ve chosen “Send people to your website.” So now it’s time to enter the destination URL where you want people to land after clicking on your ad. Remember that creating a specific landing page that is directly related to your ad will be far more effective than sending people to your website’s home page.

Step 8: Upload or select the image you want for your ad. You can have up to 6 different images (when displaying a single image per ad) so you can test to see which image gets more clicks. Facebook also offers the option to show multiple images in a slideshow-type format.

Step 9: Enter the text you want to display in your ad, and select a call to action button to give your ad that extra edge.

Step 10: Place your order, and await Facebook’s review and approval.

Headline Writing Secrets Finally Exposed

Have you heard about click baiting?

If not, here it is in a nutshell: Click baiting is effectively using content to get people to click and read. Now of course the objective of anything you write should be to get read, but with click bait this is taken to the extreme. Often click bait involves using sensationalist and extravagant titles to try and get people to click and this is something you will likely have seen on Facebook. We don’t see that as much on LinkedIn (well, maybe in my headline above).

Here are two examples of ‘click bait’ titles:

You’ll Never Guess What Happens Next in This Video – But it Will Change You Forever!

And

10 Tips That Will Help You Double Your Profits in 2015 – Number 7 Will Blow Your Mind!

In both these cases, the titles are designed to pique the curiosity of the person reading them. In the first example, you literally have no idea what the article/video is about until you click the link – you just have the assurance that it’s going to be life changing. In the second article you have a fairly generic list but the fact that ‘number 7′ will blow your mind once again gets you interested in learning what number seven might in fact be.

Should You Use These Techniques?

So that’s click bait in a nutshell… but should you use it?

The answer is no: while these articles might get a high CTR, they also likely have high bounce rates. Clicking on an article without knowing precisely what it is you’re going to be reading is frustrating for the visitor and if something amazing is promised and not delivered then this can create ill-will. If your hope is to get long-term visitors or to convert visitors into customers then this technique is only likely to drive people away.

But there is something to be said for understanding the psychology of what makes people click. You can still create content that sounds highly clickable and sharable – you just have to make sure that what you’re actually offering can back up what you’re claiming.

The real point is to stop thinking about how you can get more clicks and to instead think about how you can get more targeted clicks and then keep those people on your page.

Content Marketing: The Solution for Selling Services and Informational Products

Content marketing is a new term for an old concept. It’s the digital marketing term for writing interesting and engaging content that will deliver real value for the readers, and that brings them back to your site or your posts regularly. Search engines live this, of course, because it allows you to add lots of content to your site that will ultimately increase your chances of getting hits for ‘long-tail’ key words and phrases that people are searching for.

But more importantly, content marketing allows you to develop a relationship with your readers, to establish trust and to position yourself as an authority in your industry. This is important for any website or business, but if you sell a service or an informational product, this becomes absolutely critical.

How People Think Content Marketing Works

People have the unfortunate misconception that content marketing is useful for bringing short-term results. Their hope is that they will be able to create a great article or blog post, share it on their website and then see traffic swarm in as a result. Then they hope people will share their content around the web and that a good portion of their traffic will be converted into paying customers. They write their content, they press ‘submit’ and then they go to bed… hoping to wake up to thousands of new sales.

Not so fast!

How Content Marketing Really Works

Wouldn’t it be great if things worked as easily as that? But that’s not how content marketing really works. Instead, you’re likely to get just a few people reading your content to begin with. Of those people, some of them will make it to the end and hopefully they’ll think, “hey, that was interesting.”

Then, they will forget about you completely and not think to look for you again…
Until, that is, they stumble upon one of your articles again on Google or on Facebook and they recognize your branding. That’s two good articles they’ve read on your site now. But again they’ll leave, being impressed but not particularly moved.

Once this happens a few times though they might realize that you’re writing about the things that matter to them in a way they respond to and they might bookmark your page. Or better yet, they may subscribe to your YouTube channel/start following you on Twitter.
And then eventually there may come a time when they need someone to redesign their website/help them get into shape/provide them with online marketing… or whatever it is you might do in your business. And now they know they like and trust you, they will likely turn to you to provide the sale.

(Of course, having a system to capture their information and add them to your email list might not be such a bad idea. But we can save that for another time.)

Ultimately, content marketing is perfect for skill-based or informational-based businesses.
